What Bollard Specifications Should You Confirm Before Ordering?
Ordering bollards is not simply a matter of choosing a height and quantity. A quotation can look complete while some important details are still unclear. This can cause problems later, especially when the product needs to match an existing site or project drawing.
For contractors, distributors and project buyers, it is worth confirming the main specifications before production starts. Here are the details to check with your bollard supplier.
1. Confirm the Main Dimensions
Height and diameter are usually the first specifications discussed, but there are several other dimensions that may matter.
Depending on the design, you may need to confirm:
- Overall height
- Diameter or profile
- Wall thickness
- Base plate dimensions
- Base plate thickness
- Fixing hole size and arrangement
Two bollards can have the same height and diameter but completely different base designs. If the project already has a specified fixing arrangement, the base needs to match it.
For customized orders, a technical drawing is often the easiest way to confirm these details before production.
2. Check the Mounting Method
The installation method should be decided early because it affects the bollard design.
Some bollards are installed directly into the ground, while surface mounted bollards are fixed to an existing concrete surface with a base plate and anchors.
For a new construction project, in-ground installation may be possible. For an existing concrete or paved area, a surface-mounted design may be more practical.
If you are replacing an existing bollard, check the current fixing arrangement before ordering a new model. A product that looks similar may still have a different base plate or hole pattern.

3. Tell the Supplier Where the Bollard Will Be Used
“Bollard” covers a wide range of products. A post used to separate pedestrians from vehicles is not necessarily designed for the same application as one positioned in front of a building or warehouse.
When requesting a quotation, provide the intended application, such as:
- Building entrances
- Parking areas
- Pedestrian zones
- Loading areas
- Commercial properties
- Warehouses
- Public spaces
This gives the supplier more context when reviewing the specification.
If a project requires a specific impact-performance rating, make sure the supplier can provide the relevant test information. A standard steel bollard should not be treated as a crash-rated product unless the product and installation have been tested for that purpose.
4. Confirm Material and Surface Finish
Steel and stainless steel are both commonly used for bollards, depending on the project requirements.
For steel bollards, the surface treatment should also be confirmed. Powder coating is commonly used for outdoor products and allows the bollard to be supplied in different colors. Galvanizing may also be considered when additional corrosion protection is required.
For some projects, appearance is just as important as function. Customers may require a galvanized finish, stainless steel, a specific RAL color or reflective tape.
It is better to confirm the finish before production rather than treating it as a final detail.
5. Don't Overlook the Fixing Details
For surface-mounted bollards, the post and base plate need to be considered together.
The supplier may need to know the required hole arrangement, anchor size or existing installation conditions. If the project already has concrete foundations, these details can affect whether a particular bollard will fit.
This is another reason a drawing can be useful.
Instead of sending only:
100 pcs, 165 mm diameter, 2 m high
a buyer can provide a drawing showing the post, flange, fixing holes and other requirements. This gives the manufacturer a much clearer specification.
6. What Information Should You Include in an Enquiry?
If you are asking several suppliers for quotations, providing the same information to each one makes the offers easier to compare.
A typical enquiry can include:
|
Product: |
Fixed / removable / automatic bollard |
|
Height: |
___ mm |
|
Diameter: |
___ mm |
|
Material: |
Carbon steel/304SS/316SS |
|
Cap: |
Flat/beveled/dome/cone |
|
Wall thickness: |
___ mm |
|
Mounting: |
Surface mounted / in-ground |
|
Finish: |
Hot galvanized/E-coating/powder coating |
|
Reflective tape: |
Yes / No |
|
Quantity: |
___ pcs |
|
Drawing: |
Attached if available |
If you are still working out some of the details, that is fine. You can send the specifications you already have and discuss the remaining points with the supplier before production.
KAVASS Bollard Manufacturing
Bollards are one of the product areas KAVASS has been working with for more than 18 years. Our 13 engineers handle product development and OEM/ODM projects, including orders based on customer drawings and specifications.
For production, we have CNC bending and powder coating capabilities in-house. Standard models are available, while dimensions, finishes and other details can be discussed for customized orders. We also accept small MOQ, which can be useful when a customer wants to test a product before placing a larger order.
The more clearly the product details are agreed before production, the fewer changes there are to deal with later.

FAQ
What should I check before approving a bollard quotation?
Check that the quotation matches the required dimensions, mounting method, material, finish, fixing details and quantity. If the project has a drawing, the quoted product should also be checked against it.
Can bollards be customized?
Yes. Depending on the design, dimensions, base plate, finish, markings and other details can be customized for OEM and project requirements.
Do surface mounted bollards require a drawing?
Not always. Standard models can usually be quoted from basic specifications, but a drawing is useful when the project has specific base plate or fixing requirements.
